West Coast Eagles predicted to be the next AFL powerhouse

2 min read

Respected number crunchers Champion Data have released a prediction about which club they believe will dominate the competition and become the next AFL super power.

And the club is… the West Coast Eagles.

The thinking?

“If there was ever a side cherry ripe to have sustained success and remain in premiership contention similar to what the Hawks have done, West Coast is the team,’’ says Champion Data.

“You will struggle to find a more balanced list. It heads into this season as the sixth-oldest side, and ranks fourth for experience. What’s more impressive is the spread of players across all age brackets.’’

The prediction was made in Champion Data’s official 2016 AFL Prospectus.

By the company’s calculations, the Eagles are entering a long premiership window as their 21-24-year-old players are better than the corresponding batch in any other club.

They also have 17 players in the 25-29 “prime” age category.

“They have nine players between the ages of 21-24 – right on the AFL average – with the quality of this group rating a clear No.1,’’ says the Prospectus.

Despite finishing 13th on the ladder in 2013, Champion Data predicted the Eagles would be the third best team in 2014, reports Fox Sports. The club narrowly missed the finals that year, but finished second in 2015 after losing in a Grand Final played against the Hawks.
