The saddest footy photo of all time?

1 min read

Western Bulldogs coach Luke Beveridge did a brilliant job of including hard luck captain Bob Murphy in the trophy presentation after the dogs won the AFL Premiership on Saturday…

But a photographer caught a heartbreaking moment during the team photo that followed.

In the top right corner, Murphy can be seen slinking into the background as his teammates celebrate.

“I didn’t see him during the shot, only after during editing,” AAP photographer Julian Smith told news.com.au.

“It’s gut wrenching.

“I can’t recall ever taking such a heartbreaking sports photo in my career. Shooting the AFL Grand Final is all about triumph and tragedy and sometimes you get it all in the one frame but not with players from the same team. It’s a once-in-a lifetime-photo.”

But it wasn’t all doom and gloom for Murphy.

After the game, Beveridge called the injured captain up onto the stage and handed over his premiership medal to Murphy, who then got to hoist the cup with stand-in captain Easton Wood.
