Stage 2 crucial to Tour Down Under result

1 min read

The Advertiser’s cycling writer Reece Homfray says Wednesday’s Stage 2 of the TDU will be pivotal to the race result.

“She’s a big day,” Reece told FIVEAA on Tuesday.

“I think we’ll probably see the top 10 overall basically shaped tomorrow, and then it will just be a shuffling of places as we get closer to Willunga Hill.”

LISTEN HERE:

Reece said the Stage 2 climb up Torrens Hill Rd would be a tough one…

“She’s very, very steep,” he said, “so one for the climbers — your Richie Portes, Esteban Chaves… and if guys like Peter Sagan the world champ or Simon Gerrans can just hang on and limit the damage, then they’ll consider that a win. Definitely one for the mountain goats.”

After Stage 1, four Aussie riders were in the top 10 — which Reece called a “good result”.

“There’s a guy called Jay McCarthy who actually wore the leader’s jersey last year. He was quite aggressive today… and there’s another guy called Nathan Haas, him and Simon Gerrans…

“All those names mentioned are still in with a shot with five big days to go,” Reece said.
