Leigh Matthews Reckons A Former Crow Could Pull A “Brian Lake” At His New Club

1 min read

Former Adelaide Crow Sam Jacobs is a chance of tasting premiership glory in the twilight of his career, says AFL great Leigh Matthews.

Lethal told the FIVEAA sports show:

“I reckon he could go to the Giants and be almost the Brian Lake, what happened with Hawthorn about five years ago when all of a sudden they were short of a really big defender. It looked like Brian Lake’s career was just petering out at the Bulldogs, and of course Lake went to Hawthorn, he won the three premierships, won the Norm Smith medal in 2013 because Hawthorn desperately needed a big powerful defender and Lake filled that role.

“If ever there is a club right up the top of the ladder that is looking like they need an established ruckman it’s the Giants. Mumford’s been good but he looked like he was wearing out almost by the week. If Sam Jacobs is even 90 per cent of what he has been at his best he’s going to be enormously valuable for the Giants. Everyone might win-win on that one or maybe his best is behind him.

“But he’s going to have every chance at the Giants of making a team that’s right in the premiership window.”
