Jockey stood down over “shepherding” incident

2 min read

UPDATE, Tuesday 10:07am — Jockey shocked by replay of his own reckless riding.

The jockey who stunned the nation after appearing to deliberately ride his horse into opponents at race at Morphettville on Saturday was stunned when he watched the replay, says the man who called the race.

“I know for a fact he was remorseful after the race,” Terry McAuliffe told the FIVEAA sports show on Monday.

“When he actually watched the replay and saw the carnage he nearly caused, well, he couldn’t believe it.

“What went through his mind, why did he do it — that’s what the stewards need to get to the bottom of. Hopefully it will be tidied up by the end of the week.”

Terry said he had spoken with some of the other jockeys who rode in the now infamous race…

“The rumours are going 100mph, as you would expect. I can let you know… there was certainly no altercation in the jockeys room. It was business as usual. There was no problems whatsoever in there.”

“We can squash that one.

“They said he was just normal Josh Cartwright. What actually happened in that race on Saturday at the moment is a mystery. It is now obviously a stewards inquiry. He’s pleaded guilty of reckless ridding.”

“What we saw on Saturday we haven’t seen the like of that before…

“There must be an explanation.”

EARLIER…

The Advertiser’s chief racing writer Ben Scadden says an incident at Morphettville on Saturday looked more like something you would see on a footy field.

Jockey Josh Cartwright has been stood down pending an investigation into the moment he appeared to deliberately ride his horse into two rivals.

WATCH HERE:

“In footy terms it’s like he was shepherding really hard to stop those horses having any chances of winning the race,” Ben told FIVEAA brekkie.

“To make matters worse… the winner was ridden by Josh’s girlfriend. It looked really bad. People were stunned after the race.

“First look was bad and the second look when you saw the replay was even worse… you could see that there certainly appeared to be some intent there.”
