Impey working his “arse off” to win back respect, says Boak

2 min read

Port Adelaide captain Travis Boak says Jarman Impey is trying to make amends on the training track for his off-field slip up earlier in the month.

Impey was fined and suspended by the club following a hit-run incident that is still under police investigation.

“It’s been a pretty tough ride for him,” Travis told the FIVEAA sports show. “He was just so disappointed in his actions, and the way he now has trained over the last couple of weeks has been incredible.”

“He’s pretty remorseful for what he’s done and he’s trying to work his arse off to get back a bit of respect from the playing group — and he’s certainly doing that.

“He’s still got a lot to deal with and well continue to support him.”

“Obviously it’s been a really challenging past couple of weeks,” Boak said.

“Not only that, it’s probably been a really challenging couple of months. He lost his dad not long ago and that’s something you don’t want anyone to go through, especially at that age.”

Boak side-stepped questions about the perceived failure of teammates to prevent the Impey incident…

“I can’t go into too much detail. It’s an ongoing police investigation. Certainly we try and pride ourselves on being great people and looking after each other.”

But he stood by the club’s position on what players get up to out of hours:

“I don’t think there’s a place for setting rules. I think each player has an opportunity to make the right choices. That’s the path we want to go down.

“We want to try and set a great standard and example for the rest of the playing group as leaders. Each player has to grow as a person and try and make the right choices.

“Unfortunately that didn’t happen, and you learn your lesson from that.”
