Herald Sun footy reporter Mick Warner has floated a seriously ‘evil genius’ theory on why AFL boss Gil McLachlan might be reluctant to give players the cut of revenue they are asking for…
“I reckon the AFL quite likes the idea of a lot of clubs being on the breadline,” Mick told the FIVEAA sports show… “because they can control them.”
Sounds devious… but is Mick onto something?
“They probably won’t like me saying that, but I think there’s plenty of cash in football — and it should be handed out the clubs and the players a but more than it currently is.”

“There’s a hell of a lot of money in football,” Mick said. “They’ve just signed a $2.5 billion TV deal [and] there’s other revenue streams.”
“I think the percentage model is completely reasonable that the players are asking for. It’s only 28 per cent, not 50 per cent, as it is in other sports around the world that use the money…
“That’s 72 per cent of the money that can go to things like clubs and grassroots football.”
