Indigenous sports star Anthony Mundine is urging players to boycott the national anthem at the AFL grand final on Saturday.
He says the anthem was written in the late 1700s when “blackfellas were considered fauna”…
But PM Malcolm Turnbull and Swans champ Lance Franklin has fobbed off the suggestion.
“I think everyone should sing and everyone should just be proud about their country, our country, and the fact that we can come together in sport,” the prime minister told Neil Mitchell on 3AW radio on Friday.
Asked during the AFL grand final parade about Mundine’s call, Franklin told Fairfax it was the “first I’ve heard of it.”
“Personally I think it’s pretty stupid really. It’s the Australian national anthem, it’s a part of our sport, our history.”
He said there was “no chance” he would boycott the anthem.
Mundine shared a Facebook video calling for the boycott on Thursday — along with a comment saying it could “start changing Australia’s ignorant mentality”.
