There will be no more ‘third man up’ at ruck contests from next season, the AFL announced on Wednesday afternoon.
According to afl.com.au, only nominated ruckmen will now be allowed to compete at thrown-ins and ball-ups.
The popular tactic has been widely used by clubs who often like to send a ‘third man up’ over the top of the main ruck duel.
“Eliminating the ‘third man up’ at ruck contests will support the recruitment of tall players and ensure our game continues to be played at the elite level by players of various sizes and differing abilities,” AFL footy operations manager Mark Evans said.
Opinions on the tactic have been split when previously raised with AFL coaches.
Speaking on the FIVEAA sports show, Kane Cornes said the rule change was a “drastic move… potentially an over-reaction”.
But he added: “I like the fact that it brings the dominant ruckman back into play. It suits Port Adelaide and it suits the Crows actually.”
