Retiring Adelaide Crow Scott Thompson has had a laugh with teammates, telling them his exit is against coach Don Pyke’s wishes.
“He was willing to back me in for another couple of years — until I was at least 38,” Thommo told teammates during his retirement announcement. “I made my way down to Bird’s office and he told me to get the f— out!
“So with that rejection I’ve decided to flick the bails off my career come season’s end.”
Thommo told his fellow Crows the club had a special opportunity this year — but it came with a warning:
“I’m certainly going to keep putting my hand up, so don’t slack off at the top otherwise I’ll certainly bloody jump in and take your spot.
“I’ve played in three losing prelims and it hasn’t come around for me again. Don’t think as a young guy it’s just going to happen, because it won’t. You need to make it happen.
“Make the most of it. Work hard and don’t die wondering.”
