Former Geelong teammate Shannon Byrnes has confirmed a legend about Steve Johnson that came out of the Cats’ historic 119-point win over Port Adelaide in the ’07 GF.
Byrnes told SEN on Thursday morning:
“I was yelling out to him actually just to get him into structure and he wasn’t answering and he said, ‘It’s not my name, my name’s Norm’.
“Halfway through the third (quarter) of ’07 he changed the name to Norm so he was pretty confident he’d be up on the stage twice that day.
“We were going well, the team were going well. But he thought he was going even better than that.”
Stevie J won three premierships, one Norm Smith medal and was All-Australian three times. He announced his retirement on Thursday.
