Hawthorn will not trade star defender Ryan Burton against his wishes in a deal for Port Adelaide’s Chad Wingard, according to a report.
Wingard has nominated Hawthorn as his club of choice, and Port reportedly asked for Burton plus pick 15 in return.
Hawthorn supporters reacted angrily to the possibility of trading Burton, and according to News Corp’s Jay Clark:
“Hawthorn told Burton the club wanted him to stay at the club for 2019 and beyond.
“But Hawthorn also gauged Burton’s interest in a possible move back home to South Australia.
“It shows the Hawks are prepared to discuss the possible Burton trade with the player and his manager, Marty Pask.
“Burton has some time to think about what he wants to do.
“If he wants to stay at the club, Hawthorn will take Burton off the table in the negotiations for Wingard with Port Adelaide.
“Burton is overseas and is yet to make a decision.”
