Mark Bickley Talks About Don Pyke’s Shock Exit

2 min read

Former Adelaide Crows skipper and FIVEAA’s Mark Bickley says perhaps senior coach Don Pyke “got a sniff of the breeze” before sensationally stepping down on Thursday.

Speaking on FIVEAA just minutes after news of Pyke’s departure broke, Bicks admitted he was surprised:

“They’re part way through an internal and an external review. I would’ve thought if you’re going to step down you either step down before the review starts or after the review finishes, one or the other as opposed to midway through.

“Maybe he got a sniff of the breeze of what was unfolding as the review was taking place and to save everyone the time and energy he would make it pretty easy.

“Brenton Sanderson missed the finals two years in a row, now Don Pyke has missed the finals two years in a row. Both coaches have copped it on the back if that. It’s a fairly unforgiving footy club.

“There are plenty of other clubs — [Collingwood coach] Nathan Buckley missed the finals for four or five years in a row and they were able to re-appoint him. I’m not sure if it’s the nature of Adelaide and the bubble that exists here, but certainly they’re not standing for those type of results.”
