David Pittman and Malcolm Blight tell all about the legendary ‘pathetic Pittman’ moment.
In an upcoming doco about Adelaide’s ’97 premiership, the former Adelaide ruckman talks about copping a spray from Malcolm Blight at quarter-time…
“At halftime I got another one,” Pittman says. “Once again you get to the bench and everyone is sort of laughing and thinking it’s hysterical.”
“At three quarter-time there was another one where I hadn’t actually played for a half.
“It was at that point I thought ‘This guy actually has a loose chip’.”
Blighty then famously went on to give a brutal post-game interview on Channel 7:
“To start like that means you won’t win,” Blight said at the time.
“Particularly with a pathetic effort from Pittman in ruck.”
These days Blight is more measured:
“I seriously didn’t mean that,” Blight says.
“I meant to have a go at him, don’t worry about that. But I just didn’t mean to bag him like that.
“David said to me ‘from then on, I knew exactly what I had to do and what was required.’
“David Pittman was never dropped in my time at the Adelaide Crows and played every time he was available.”
