Adelaide Crow Eddie Betts has apologised for comments he made about punching in the AFL that he says were misunderstood.
“I think that was taken way out of proportion,” Eddie told FIVEAA breakfast on Friday. “I honestly don’t want punching.”
“People think that I want punching in the game — that’s not correct. I don’t want people to go out there and punch because I’ve got two little boys. They’ll go to school and if they say, ‘Dad thinks it’s alright to punch, then I can punch.’ No, that’s incorrect.
“It’s a contact sport and we don’t want to take the contact out of the sport…
“[But] I don’t want people to go out there with a mindset of I’m going to punch somebody with a closed first. That’s not my intention to say that. If people read that the wrong way, then I’m sorry.
“It’s not my intention that I want punching in the game — incorrect.”
