The Superloop 500 could be on its way to a new venue, according to a rumour shared on air by FIVEaa’s Tony Pilkington -- but not everyone is convinced.

Repeating a rumour he’d heard “doing the traps”, Pilko said on Monday:

“The Superloop 500 may have run it’s last race in the CBD. With crowds at yesterday’s event falling to an 18 year low, organisers have apparently had enough.

“From as early as next year the race will be permanently moved to The Bend Motorsport Park… that’s the rumour doing the traps…”

But FIVEaa listener and Adelaide 500 official Dean rang Pilko to say the Supercars “won’t go to Tailem Bend twice a year”.

“Supercars have got a program that they won’t have racing at the same track twice a year,” he said. “And there is always a preference for a street circuit to a ready-made circuit.

“For people to go to The Bend, if you can get accommodation -- which you can’t within 80kms of The Bend even when the races are on up there with the V8s in September -- to do a 200km round trip every day if you go up there for four days -- the running costs, petrol… you wouldn’t want to come back to Adelaide every day.”

He said moving the date of the race was “the biggest mistake ever”.

“When the Formula 1 race was here in Adelaide in November nothing else clashed with it and we got 200,000 people on one day.”
