Geelong footy club has raised millions of dollars and is on a path to eliminating debt thanks to an idea it borrowed from ballet, reports Caroline Wilson.

This week Caro was at the AFL CEO’s conference where she heard from Cats’ boss Brian Cook.

“[He] spoke at length about an idea he had when he went -- believe it or not -- to the Australian Ballet a couple of years ago,” Caro told Rowey and Bicks on FIVEaa.

“[He] looked at the way the arts across Australia have made such massive steps forward in terms of philanthropy and raising money,” Caro said. “It was that model he adopted to raise something like $16 million for this new stage that we’re going to see unveiled on Friday night at Simmonds Stadium… it’s quite fascinating.”

“He also pledged that Geelong would eventually have no poker machines at all under this new model... and that the Cats will soon be debt free.”

She said it was an idea the two clubs from Adelaide -- “one of the artistic capitals of this country” -- could use to raise money.
