Graham Cornes says he rang Malcolm Blight to apologise after sledging then Cats coach Malcolm Blight in the 90s…

Cornesy’s confession came after the AFLW’s Stacey Livingstone called opponent Tayla Harris “useless” in a post-game interview last weekend.

Cornesy told the FIVEaa sports show:

“Have you ever sledged somebody publicly, one of your opponents?

“In the AFL system I made a quote about Blighty once, which I regretted. We played at Footy Park and the Geelong team lined up… I thought the intent was to mock us. I couldn’t work out why they lined them up.

“They asked me straight after the game what did you think of it? I said I thought it was really stupid, all it did was fire us up. Then when the comments replayed publicly I thought, oh gosh, that doesn’t read well at all. I rang Blighty and I said, look mate, I’m sorry, I didn’t mean any disrespect but I just didn’t know what you were trying to do with it.”

“I did regret sledging Blighty afterwards.”

As for the incident, in which Geelong players lined up and waited for Crows players to run onto the ground, Mark Bickley says Blight himself doesn’t know why they did it.

BICKS: “I don’t think he knows. I’ve spoken to him about it. He said they’d played there a lot and hadn’t won and he decided we’ll do something different. He suggested it to Gary Hocking thinking he would say, nah, that’s a stupid idea let’s not do it, and Gary hocking said, yeah, let’s give it a go.”
