Inaugural Adelaide Crows coach and FIVEaa’s Graham Cornes says he doesn’t think Adelaide will make the eight but it’s not all doom and gloom.

Cornesy told the FIVEaa sports show:

“I am pessimistic about what I’ve seen but it has to be balanced by the fact that I don’t think Geelong won a game, I don’t think West Coast won a game, I don’t think Richmond won a game in the pre-season, so it’s not the be all and end all.

“I saw signs on Friday, which were pleasing when they move the ball quickly. Matthew Nicks might be trying to develop this whole of ground defensive action. If that means holding the ball up and having defenders look around and try to hit targets with short kicks forget it because it’s not going to work. They’re not good enough with their disposal… there has to be a rethink of the game plan.

“I don’t think they’ll make the eight but it’s not as doomy and as gloomy as people want you to believe. Fixing your lack of contested possession is the easiest thing to do in footy. You don’t have to be a great player to win contested ball, he just has to get them on the same page.”
