Caroline Wilson says the biggest AFL story of 2019 was “a footballer by the name of Marlion Pickett”.

Pickett’s fairy tale Grand Final debut topped Caro’s list of the 12 biggest footy stories of the year.

“He was in jail as a 19-20 year old,” she said. “He was brought in in a new system, which hasn’t happened before -- a mid season draft -- it was a massive story when he got drafted.

“He came over with a broken finger, four children, 27 years old, did not manage to even play in the Richmond reserves until one game before the finals, winning the best player in the VFL grand final…

“And then on Thursday night Damien Hardwick announced to the match committee that he wanted to play Marlion Pickett in a Grand Final team, a man who has never played an AFL game. This has only happened four times in the history of the game -- twice as a premiership player, four times as a Grand Final player.

“That pirouette… then of course Dustin Martin kicking to him so he gets a goal… that is an unbelievable story.”
