The AFL had no choice but to force the resignation of two senior execs caught up in scandal this week, says Caroline Wilson.

On Friday Gillon McLachlan announced Simon Lethlean and Richard Simkiss has resigned over “inappropriate relationships with two younger women who work in the AFL industry”.

“It’s the abuse of power,” Caro Wilson told the FIVEaa sports show. “It’s the potential for the abuse of power. The words Gillon McLachlan used, he certainly used the words ‘respect’ and ‘responsibility’, but he also used the terms ‘caring for each other’ and ‘integrity’.

“In the end the view of the commission was that these affairs showed a lack of integrity because both men were married.”

Caro said she had been “completely shocked” by the news.

“I just didn’t think this would be the case in this day and age at the AFL.

“I’m really sad it’s happened to them, I particularly have always really liked and enjoyed working with Simon who I rate as a performer and as a person.

“When I heard his name on Monday I really couldn’t believe it… but I did think it was going to go this way because I know Gillon McLachlan has been really forced to grow up in this area.”
