Officials Admit Besieged RAH Emergency Department Is ‘Churning Through’ Staff

Nov 7, 2018

Reports about 50 staff have left the Royal Adelaide Hospital’s emergency department in the year since it opened have been confirmed by the local health workers union.

“We are aware,” Bernadette Mulholland from the SA Salaried Medical Officers Association told FIVEaa's Leon Byner on Wednesday.

“It has been brought to our attention in our discussion with the doctors that a number of senior nurses have churned through the emergency department over the last 12 months the hospital has been opened.

“Some of those reasons was because of the environment they were working in. Now it’s very difficult to retain senior nursing staff in the emergency department and other areas because of the pressures they are under.

“That is very disappointing they are very much needed in our system.”

On Monday the RAH hit a new ramping low with 18 ambulances banked up outside the hospital and reports at least one hospital staffer was assaulted by a patient.
