Former Australian Idol judge Mark Holden has told off singing sensation Tina Arena for complaining about TV talent shows.

“I love Tina Arena,” Mark told Jade Robran on FIVEaa. “I really do, but Tina complains about the Idol/X-factor/Voice shows.”

“Well, get over it, Tina. You came up on your show, on Young Talent Time, and there’s not a whole lot of difference.”

Mark said:

“She complains about the talent shows. Well, the talent shows have meant that people like Dami Im get up. Guy Sebastian -- a Malaysian Australian from Adelaide who, 15 years later, is still having hits on the charts.

“This idea that they’re here today, gone tomorrow is just not right.”

He praised the talent shows for being “democratic”:

“They take out the middle man and the public gets to choose an Asian Australia with Dami Im, an indigenous Australian with Casey Donovan.

“Whereas the gatekeepers of the Australian record business in the 60s, 70s, 80s and 90s were more or less white male.”

Mark's book 'My Idol Years' is out now.
