Speaking on FIVEaa about his government’s backtracking on cardio services at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Premier Jay Weatherill was keen to talk about past Liberal government decisions.

“All it sounds like is you don’t want to talk about your government’s recent history,” Will Goodings told Mr Weatherill on FIVEaa breakfast. “In 2010 former Premier Mike Rann announced an upgrade of $125m to the QEH. Your government before the 2014 election promised something similar…. And here we are getting a QEH announcement again. Do you accept there’s a trust issue now?”

Mr Weatherill said:

“If the question is health, the answer is not Liberal. The answer will always be Labor because people know we put in place Medicare. We’re the party of public investment in public hospitals and public health.”

Mr Weatherill has announced a $250 million overhaul for the QEH, which will see cardiac services -- which were to be moved -- now remain at the hospital.

“These changes, they’re great in theory,” Mr Weatherill said. “But you’ve also got to implement them in practice… we have modified things along the way.

“I make no apology for listening to people and for actually recalibrating our plans to make sure we’ve got good community support, and that’s what we’ve done at the QEH with cardio.”
