It would be naïve to think the horrific conditions revealed at Oakden are only confined to that facility, says whistleblower Stewart Johnston.

“Let’s not believe for one second that it’s just at Oakden,” Steward told David and Will on FIVEaa breakfast.

The Oakden facility was shut down after a horrific level of neglect was exposed, which some now fear may have led to premature deaths at the centre.

“I think we’d have naivety to believe it’s just at Oakden,” Stewart said.

“The system has been ripe for many, many years for this type of thing to flourish. Yes, it’s a difficult industry but we’ve also got to be concerned.”

Stewart’s mother spent time in the Oakden Mental Health Facility and questioned why centres should be notified of upcoming inspections:

“It’s a ridiculous situation that these nursing homes and care facilities receive up to four weeks notice of a pending visit.

“If you’re a food operator, the food inspector isn’t going to ring you up and say, ‘Can you clean your kitchen? We’re going to come and inspect it in five days.’

“If the police are going to search your house, they’re not going to ring you three days before and ask you to vacuum.

“But these care facilities obviously ‘shine the turd’, pardon my expression, in time for these auditors to walk in.”

Oakden was subject a federal audit in 2008.

“Questions need to be asked,” Stewart said.
