FIVEaa’s David Penberthy has warned against a “cop-out line of nonsense” suggesting tragedies like the murder-suicide in Queensland this week occur “because of the family court”.

Mother Hannah Baxter and her children Aaliyah, 6, Laianah, 4 and Trey, 3, were killed when Rowan Baxter set their car alight on Wednesday.

Penbo told FIVEaa Breakfast on Thursday:

“Let’s not call it a fire that somehow engulfed a family. This was an act of deliberate and crazed violence by a screwed up bloke against his wife and kids. There’s no way to spin it. It’s a heavy story and so harrowing. If anyone out there is going through difficulties of any nature 13 11 14 is the number for Lifeline.”

“The manner in which some of these blokes get so bent out of shape through family issues… I hate the fact that there’s an excuse-making component within the community who will look at a story like this and go, well, this is all happening because of the family court. That is the biggest cop-out line of nonsense going around it lets bad blokes off the hook.

“The idea that you would ever be so upset about your access relationships to your children let alone your partner… that you would actually kill them, that is a totally mental and warped and sick line of argument but there’s people who run it.”
