“Tool of the week” Graham Cornes revives state jumper fight

2 min read

Mark Bickley has named inaugural Adelaide Crows coach Graham Cornes “tool of the week” after Cornesy tried to revive the dead-and-buried debate about SA’s state jumper after the women’s state team wore the guernsey.

“Now don’t think that I’m being critical, because we have schoolboys wear the state jumper,” Cornes said on the FIVEAA Sports Show on Monday.

“[But] I’m thinking, why can those girls wear that state jumper, but when the Crows want to wear it as a heritage guernsey to pay respect and homage to the SANFL, why was there such a furore?”

“It just amused me seeing the girls running around in it,” he said.

LISTEN TO GRAHAM CORNES HERE:

There was uproar in 2014 when the Crows decided to wear SA’s state jumper in a Showdown with Port Adelaide, a move eventually blocked by the AFL.

“The Crows weren’t ever going to say they were representing the state. They were paying respect to their heritage,” Cornes said.

“You’ve got guys like Warren Tredrea and Chris McDermott saying, ‘Oh you can’t wear that.’”

But Mark Bickley pounced on Cornesy’s comment, pointing out, “The Crows are a club, and the girls are representing the state.”

“Let it go, mate. It’s gone. Done,” he said.

Bicks then decided to drop his original Adelaide Tools tool of the week nomination – the surface at ANZ Stadium.

“I’m going to rescind that, because Graham, you’ve just become the Adelaide Tools tool of the week by suggesting the girls that wore the state guernsey are no different to the Adelaide Football Club wanting to wear the state guernsey.”

“You’re going to be tool of the year the way you’re going,” Bicks said.
