Ollie Wines braces for clash with schoolboy rival and good mate Jack Viney

2 min read

AFL young bucks Ollie Wines and Jack Viney have been good friends since their primary school days, but there’ll be no love lost when Port Adelaide take on Melbourne this Saturday.

“I’ve grown up with Jack, he’s one of my closest mates,” Wines told David and Will on FIVEAA Breakfast.

“It’s really good to go head-to-head with him, we don’t really get the opportunity too much.

“He’s the type of guy who’s pretty physical, so he’ll try and hit me and punch me in the gut and everything.

“I sort of just laugh it off,” Wines said. “I always have. I’ve never really been one to throw them back, I just sort of laugh at him and it makes him more angry.”

“We were knocking around at school a few years ago, and now we’re playing AFL against each other.”

Wines said he expects to line up on Viney when Port Adelaide play Melbourne in Alice Springs on Saturday afternoon.

“He’s probably my role tomorrow, playing inside, he’s their main clearance player.”

Wines said he was sledged mercilessly by Viney when they met in a game during the preseason.

“I made the mistake of getting a mohawk cut for the NAB Cup game this year against them,” Wines said.

“It was the worst game of football I ever played and he was giving it to me the whole day, and then a couple of weeks after still.

“I haven’t made the same mistake twice.”

Asked who was the better player during their school days, Wines tipped his hat to Viney.

“He probably got it. He was a bit more aggressive.”
