Penbo Not Happy At Suggestions Erin Phillips Could Coach PAFC Women’s Team

2 min read

“Get your hands off”

FIVEAA Breakfast’s David Penberthy has told Port Adelaide to “get your hands off” following suggestions Adelaide Crows star Erin Philips could be Port’s inaugural women’s coach.

LISTEN HERE:

Port will bid to field its first AFLW team in the 2022-23 season after the AFL this week announced a plan to expand the league. CEO Matthew Richardson was asked on Rowey’s Sports Show if the club would chase Philips – whose father Greg is a Port hero – to be its first women’s team coach:

“Chris [Davies] and his team have already been doing a fair bit of work on our list and recruiting strategy,” Richardson said. “We’re not going to be coming in just to make up the numbers. Our people expect us to be competitive and playing to win straight away.”

“I’m sure we’ll build a really competitive team and they’re all the things we have to get ready in terms of building out our coaching structure, our support team structure… it’s really important that we structure the AFLW program to set ourselves up for success and that’s absolutely what we’ll be doing.”

PENBO: “Get your hands off our Erin, Matthew Richardson. Seriously. Two-times Crows premiership champion. Obviously here’s a genetic connection to the Port Adelaide Football Club – I would say she’s made all her history as a footballer at West Lakes.”

WILL: “It will be fascinating to see how that plays out because there would likely be some form of temptation there.”
