“It was always going to get worse before it got better,” Premier Daniel Andrews said.
Andrews also announced that Victorians living in the restricted areas are now requested to wear masks when they are in public and cannot maintain social distancing.
This includes at a supermarket, in a taxi or Uber and on public transport.
“We have started the process of getting two million masks made and we will distribute them throughout the community,” Andrews said.
The wearing of masks is not compulsory, but is a request.
Victoria’s Chief Health Officer Brett Sutton said Friday’s case number is “ugly,” but the state may well record worse numbers in the days to come.
