Transport Minister has bad news about South Road closure

2 min read

UPDATE, 11:46am — Minister says South Rd likely to be closed until weekend.

EARLIER…

Transport Minister Stephen Mullighan says a section of South Rd will remain closed for all of Thursday — and can’t say when it will reopen.

“I think it’s important that motorists understand that South Rd will definitely be closed for the remainder of today,” Mr Mullighan told FIVEAA brekkie on Thursday morning. “We’ll provide further updates through the course of the day… and when we might be able to get South Rd back open.”

“It will definitely be closed for the remainder of today.”

LISTEN HERE:

South Rd between Cross Rd and Anzac Highway was closed on Wednesday after debris fell from a bike path attached to the tram overpass.

Mr Mullighan said engineers would start work on Thursday morning to fix the damaged span, and the road wouldn’t reopen until “we can be confident that it’s safe enough for motorists to continue using South Rd.”

“It’s a short term fix… it’s just designed so we can get the traffic back using this part of South Rd.”

He said the long-term fix would depend on what’s gone wrong with the bridge span, which he suspected a failed bearing…

“But we’re yet to have that conclusive verified.”
