The ESL has dropped -- but don’t pop the champagne yet

1 min read

SA’s emergency services levy has been reduced… slightly.

The 1.1 per cent decrease is worth $3 for owners of homes in the metro area worth $443,000, reports The Advertiser.

“We raise exactly what we need to fund our emergency services. It’s controversial, it’s difficult, but most of all it’s transparent,” Treasurer Tom Koutsantonis said.

“This is a tax that tells you exactly where your money is going. And not one cent of it goes anywhere else other than emergency services.”

The average ESL bill was doubled in 2014, and the opposition has thumbed its nose at the size of the reduction announced today.

“Tom Koutsantonis mugged South Australian families three years ago and now he’s throwing them a couple of coins towards a cup of coffee,” opposition treasury spokesman Rob Lucas said.
