SAPOL Is ‘Splitting Resources’ After A Jump In Business Break-Ins During COVID-19 Crisis

1 min read

SA Police Commissioner Grant Stevens says his team is having to “split our resources” following an increase in break-ins after many small businesses were forced to close during the current coronavirus crisis.

Commissioner Stevens told FIVEAA Breakfast’s David & Will on Friday:
“This is the challenge for us.   “We’re dedicating resources now to ensure people comply with the new social distancing requirements because we want to stop the spread of this virus to try and reduce the number of people in South Australia who are going to die from it.   “But we also have our ongoing obligations to make sure the rest of the community is safe from crime and disorder. The shift that we’re seeing creates opportunities for those people who prey on the vulnerable, take advantage of these businesses…   “We’re trying to split our resources to make sure we’re dealing with the virus issue but also looking after those people who have become more vulnerable in their business because they’re not able to be there.   “It’s a balancing act for us but it’s one we’re really looking at.”
