Shadow transport minister David Pisoni says it could be days before South Rd is re-opened after it was closed when debris fell from a bike path attached to the tram overpass.
The road was closed between Cross Rd and Anzac Highway on Wednesday morning, causing major traffic disruptions.
Mr Pisoni said workers on the scene were “openly speculating” that it could be days before the stretch of road is re-opened.
“I’ve just learnt that they’re actually fencing off the bridge from pedestrian access, so you won’t be able to walk underneath it,” he said.
“Traffic won’t be able to drive under the tram pass and nor will you be able as a pedestrian to walk underneath.”
He said transport minister Stephen Mullighan needed to clarify for how long the road will be closed.
“If the minister knows South Rd won’t be open in the morning, he needs to clarify.”
