Plane loses power mid-flight

1 min read

A Singapore Airlines Airbus A330 was mid-flight on its way from Singapore to Shanghai over the weekend when it lost power in both engines.

The incident has been reported by The Aviation Herald.

The Rolls-Royce engines on the plane apparently experienced the problem while it was cruising at around 39 000 feet.

The engines failed when the plane was just south of Hong Kong, causing the plane to descend 13 000 feet before the crew was able to restart the engines.

The plane landed half an hour later safely.

The Aviation Herald is reporting the plane “experienced a temporary loss of power” after it butted heads with some bad weather.

When a jet like an A330 loses engine power, it’s certified to fly for up to four hours on the remaining engine – BUT when it loses both engines, the situation is far worse.

The pilots on hand were trained to handle the situation.

Essentially, they dropped the plane to drift to “glide” speed, which is a gradual descent.

There is no reason for both engines stopping as yet.
