Penbo Drops A Supercars Bombshell After The Adelaide 500 Was Axed

2 min read

The Supercars Championship has been “completely blindsided” by the dropping of the Adelaide 500 race and will not consider The Bend as an alternative option for V8 racing in SA, reports FIVEAA Breakfast’s David Penberthy.

Penbo said during Friday’s Breaking @ 8 segment discussions had been underway to potentially hold the Adelaide event in November:

“Supercars Championship thought the talks were going well. They were completely blindsided yesterday when they got a phone call at 11am from the SA Tourism Commission saying we’re pulling the pin. They scrambled and came up with a list of questions to see if they could keep things on track. They got no answers to those questions, they got no calls from the Premier/Tourism Minister Steven Marshall about this momentous decision. At 6pm they found out at the same time as the public and the media when it was announced.

“This is where it gets a bit ominous. I’ve spoken to somebody, these are people who are beyond plugged in, these are the guys. Here are some quotes about The Bend and the idea that there’s an alternative as the tourism boss suggested. Quote: ‘There is no Plan B. If this falls over there are no Supercars in SA.’

“That is the official view from Supercars Championship. They think The Bend is too far away, there’s no local economy, there’s no local businesses, there’s not even close to enough hotels or hospitality infrastructure… they said this is it. If it goes, no V8s in SA as far as they’re concerned…

“They feel completely gutted and confused as to how the whole thing has played out.”

On Thursday the government announced the 2021 even would not go ahead and there are no plans to hold any future races in the city.
