PAFC HQ Redevelopment Has Hit A Snag, Reports Penbo

2 min read

“There’s been a bit of a hiccup”

UPDATED – Tuesday 7 Feb, 2:01pm: Work did stop on the Alberton Oval redevelopment last week, but it was unrelated to the existing contamination issue, reports David Penberthy.

After mentioning the issue on Monday, Penbo said during Tuesday’s FIVEAA Breakfast show:

“Work stopped last Friday at the Port site apparently due to the wind or some weather-related issue – it didn’t have anything to do with the contamination.

“The contamination story – which has never actually been reported on – however, contact had been made with Port members about it, and also most importantly locals in the Alberton area.”

According to Penbo, contaminated material was found in spectator mounds around Alberton Oval and set back the project by about six weeks.

Penbo said during Monday’s Breaking @ 8 segment:

“We understand there’s been a bit of a hiccup with it and that work had to stop on Friday. We’ve been told by people close to the project it was tools down and work abruptly stopped. The reason apparently is there’s been a discovery of soil contamination which they need to get to the bottom of.

“There were deliveries that were scheduled to be made on Friday and when people rocked up to deliver different building materials they were told that no work was proceeding and that everybody had downed tool.

“We’re trying to get confirmation from PAFC about it but people who are involved in the project have told us that until this issue is resolved no work is going to be continuing, so we await further details as they emerge.”

According to an update posted on the club’s website late last year:

Environmental soil investigations were undertaken to classify materials for off-site disposal or re-use in accordance with Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) requirements.

During these investigations, fill materials were encountered and classified as containing contaminated waste soils, warranting further assessment, remediation, or management.
