The Australian football world is in mourning after South Australian legend Neil Kerley lost his life in a car crash.
According to SAPOL:
Just before 5.30pm on Wednesday 29 June, police and emergency services were called to Mallee Road after reports that a Toyota station wagon towing a trailer had left the road and crashed through a fence into a paddock.
The driver and sole occupant, an 88-year-old Walker Flat man died at the scene.
Major Crash officers attended the scene and are investigating the cause of the crash.
His death is the 39th life lost on South Australian roads this year, compared with 52 at this time last year.
Premier Peter Malinauskas has told FIVEAA Breakfast he will speak to the Kerley family about the possibility of a state funeral:
“At an appropriate time I’ll reach out to the family. I’m keen to make sure the state government facilitates appropriate recognition of Neil Kerley.”
Kerley played 265 games with three SANFL clubs and coached 628 games at a total of five clubs. He represented SA 32 times and was inducted into the Australian Football Hall of Fame in 1997.
