More unemployed in SA than could sit in Adelaide Oval

1 min read

South Australia again has the highest jobless figures in the country after the state rate hit 7.3 per cent in April.

The Property Council’s Daniel Gannon said it meant more South Australians were now unemployed than the seated capacity of Adelaide Oval.

“It’s time for long-term structural reform instead of short-term band-aids,” he said.

“Our state’s policy-makers need to create every possible competitive advantage to ensure that South Australia is the country’s most attractive investment destination. If we fail to create this environment, then we risk our state’s future economic prosperity.”

While employment minister Kyam Maher said the rate was “disappointing”, he also said employment in SA was heading “in the right direction”.

He said almost 14,000 jobs were created in the state in the past 18 months.

SA’s unemployment rate is up from seven per cent in March, going against a national fall from 5.9 per cent in March to 5.7 per cent in April.
