After copping a fine for driving without having his license on him, a man in Byron Bay then copped a second fine for $106 when he returned home on foot to collect his license and left his car unlocked.
The man, known only as Aria, decided it was safer to leave his car behind rather than risk continuing to drive while not in possession of his license – but says he was stunned to receive a second fine for leaving the vehicle unlocked.
“I laughed,” Aria told Fairfax Media. “I actually couldn’t take it serious. It’s a fine, so I’ll have to pay it, but it’s just ridiculous.”
“It’s the same street where I live… it was in front of a pretty nice cafe where people were around, so no-one will steal stuff.”
The manager of a youth hostel where Aria was previously employed posted the fine on Facebook with the caption: “Has the world gone mad?”
He told Fairfax he wasn’t aware there was a law saying you couldn’t leave your car unlocked.
“There’s probably the law that you can’t carry a chicken upside down while riding a bike backwards,” he said.
But one Facebook user suggested the fine was designed to protect police in the event a vehicle is stolen.
“This fine has been about for some time, it is so they don’t have to deal with the paperwork etc when your car is stolen and you are wishing to claim from your insurance company,” the person wrote.
