Life's most common misconceptions

4 min read

This might be a hard pill to swallow. Did you know that coffee isn’t made from coffee beans!?

The truth will blow your mind.

Here’s a bunch of common misconceptions about life and our world.

– Coffee isn’t made from beans. The coffee bean is actually a SEED.

– Chameleons don’t actually change their colours to match their surroundings. They change colour in response to mood, temperature, light and communication, rather than the object they’re perched on.

– Mt Everest is NOT the tallest mountain in the world. The summit of Everest is actually officially higher above sea level than the summit of any other mountain, BUT Mauna Kea is the tallest – which is measured from base to summit. Everest is, however, the highest peak on earth.

– The Great Wall Of China cannot be seen from space. Sorry.

– One human year doesn’t equal seven dog years. It can apply to some dogs, but it depends on the size and breed of the dog.

– You don’t actually lose heat fastest through your head. That’s a myth. Humans would be just as cold if they went without a beanie as if they went sans-pants.

– The Earth doesn’t revolve around the sun? Technically the Earth, the sun and all the other planets are orbiting around the centre of mass of our solar system – NOT the actual sun.

– Different parts of your tongue do not detect different tastes… This was disproven by science – research finds that all taste sensations from all regions of the tongue – although some parts are more sensitive to certain tastes, which is probably where the misconception came from.

– Peanuts AREN’T A NUT – nope, they’re a LEGUME. Like, a bean.

– Humans have more than five senses. There are actually more like 21 senses – but the most prominent and popular? The five standard: taste, touch, smell, sound, sight.

– Fortune cookies aren’t actually a Chinese tradition. They were an invention of the Japanese and Americans before being adopted by Chinese culture.

– Sushi doesn’t actually mean “raw fish” – it actually translates to “sour-tasting”.

– Vikings didn’t wear helmets in medievil times. There is no evidence to prove they had those horned helmets like they do in movies … And comic strips…

– The bible never mentions that the forbidden fruit in the Book of Genesis is actually an apple.

– Vitamin C is not the most effective treatment for a cold. Experts state that there is no evidence that this particular vitamin can treat the cold – but it has been thought to help build the immune system to ward off potential viruses.

– Caffeine doesn’t dehydrate you! Hurray! These drinks do have a diuretic effect, but they don’t appear to increase dehydration.

– There is no dark side to the moon – the moon is constantly rotating, so there is no area of the planet which is ever in permanent darkness.

– A toilet flush doesn’t change direction depending on the hemisphere it’s in… The “backwards flush” effect is just the water jet points in the opposite direction.

– Mars is not red. The red colour we see is the result of iron rusting.

– Sunflowers don’t track the sun across the sky.

– Bats aren’t blind – they have tiny eyes, but non of the 1100 bat species are actually blind.

– Dropping a coin from the Empire State Building wouldn’t kill someone – they only weigh about a gram and it tumbles as it falls – so there’s so much air resistance that the penny can’t gain enough speed before it hits the end – it would hurt it if hit your head, but it wouldn’t kill you.

– A goldfish doesn’t have the memory span of three seconds – they actually have pretty good memories – they can even be trained to respond to certain colours of light, music and sensory cues.

– You don’t need to wait an hour after eating before you can swim safely. It might be uncomfortable, but you’re not going to drown.

– Bulls aren’t enraged by the colour red – in fact, bulls can actually only see blue and yellow – the red cape movements that flutter around are the point of aggravation for the bull.

– Seasons aren’t caused by the Earth being closer to the sun – the Earth orbits the sun, tilted always in the same direction – so throughout the year, different parts of the earth get the sun’s direct rays.

– Eating heaps of chocolate doesn’t give you pimples – There’s no evidence to prove that chocolate gives you spots.

– Shaving your leg hair doesn’t make it grow back quicker – it doesn’t change its thickness, rate of growth or colour – but because shaving merely cuts the top of the hair off, it may been “stubbly” for a while before it grows out.

– Microwave radiation doesn’t cause cancer – they don’t give off enough energy to damage the genetic material in our cells.

– Men don’t think about sex every seven seconds – there’s no real evidence to support this.
