iPhone bug wreaking havoc

1 min read

A new bug is shutting down iPhones.

The bug is sent as a simple text message – containing Arabic and non-English characters – which literally causes the phone to overload, and shut down.

This isn’t something designed by Apple. In fact, it’s a glitch in the system that lies with the way iPhone handles notifications and unicode.

The Guardian explains:

“When the text message is displayed by a banner alert or notification on the lockscreen, the system attempts to abbreviate the text with an ellipsis. If the ellipsis is placed in the middle of a set of non-Latin script characters, including Arabic, Marathi and Chinese, it causes the system to crash and the phone to reboot.”

The best way to prevent this from spreading is by NOT sending it to anyone – people sending the message are being labelled as trolls.

Apple is in the process of coming up with a solution to fix the problem.
