Giraffe born at Monarto Zoo

Apr 19, 2017

A baby giraffe has entered the world at South Australia's open range zoo.

Monarto Zoo giraffe Myeisha gave birth to the calf at about 10.50am after going into labour about twenty minutes earlier, Zoos SA says.

The gender of the baby has not yet been confirmed but it is the first giraffe born at the zoo, east of Adelaide, in eight years.

Zoos SA says the birth is an important contribution to its breeding program, with giraffes classified as vulnerable to extinction in the wild.

Another Monarto Zoo giraffe is expected to give birth any day now and several others are thought to be in the early stages of the 15-month pregnancy.
