Goolwa Beach is still closed to cockle fishing after it was closed on Sunday following the detection of elevated E. coli levels.
PIRSA’s Sean Sloan updated FIVEAA listeners on Monday morning…
“We’ll monitor it closely and as soon as they get to safe levels we’ll reopen the beach,” Sean told Pilko.
He said closing the beach was a “precautionary step” and commercial harvesting had not been affected.
“Consumers can feel safe that anything they buy from the marketplace is safe to eat.”
Heavy rainfall and high water flows out of the Murray Mouth are suspected to be a contributing factor resulting in the high E. coli levels.
