Djokovic Supporters Have Clashed With Police In Melbourne

2 min read

LATEST

Two police officers were injured and one man was arrested after Novak Djokovic supporters clashed with police in Melbourne after a decision to cancel Djokovic’s visa was overturned in court on Monday.

According to 7NEWS:

Hundreds of fans gathered outside Djokovic’s lawyer’s officers in Melbourne CBD to celebrate.

But the situation escalated on Flinders Lane and police deployed OC spray as the crowd became aggressive.

Two police officers, a male and a female, were left with minor injuries injuries that did not require treatment.

A 27-year-old man was arrested at the protest and is expected to be charged on summons with assault police and acting in a riotous manner.

Djokovic is still not certain of competing in the Australian Open after Immigration Minister Alex Hawke confirmed he is considering using his discretionary powers to again revoke the visa.

Djokovic has posted online saying he is “pleased and grateful” with the court decision and wants to “stay and to try to compete at the Australian Open.  I remain focused on that.  I flew here to play at one of the most important events we have in front of the amazing fans.  For now I cannot say more but THANK YOU for standing with me through all this and encouraging me to stay strong”.
