UPDATE, 1:37pm: The Adelaide 36ers have released a statement about an incident involving some players.
STATEMENT:
The Adelaide 36ers are aware of an incident involving players in Cairns on Sunday morning.
While our players were not subject to police action, we are disappointed they put themselves in a potentially dangerous position.
Following an unsatisfactory performance against the Cairns Taipans, we expect the playing group to be solely focussed on the task of competing for a place in the finals and we look forward to Saturday night’s home game against Brisbane.
EARLIER…
Two men have been charged after they allegedly heckled and attacked members of the Adelaide 36ers as the players returned to their hotel late at night after their game in Cairns.
According to News Ltd:
US import Jerome Randle, a former National Basketball League MVP winner, along with fellow import Eric Griffin and development player Alex Mudronja were walking from Gilligan’s at about 3am on Sunday when they were allegedly verbally abused by two men on the corner of Lake and Spence Sts.
Police alleged the incident then escalated into a physical altercation before police arrived and took two Cairns men into custody.
The Cairns Post understands another two of their teammates – veteran forward Daniel Johnson and centre Harry Froling – were also allegedly heckled by the two men minutes before the incident.
