Warning Out About South Australia’s Child Care Centres

1 min read

The federal government says SA has a higher rate of unassessed child care centres than anywhere else in Australia.

19 per cent of South Australian centres have not been assessed, which is double the national average.

SA Senator and Education Minister Simon Birmingham said:

“The Weatherill Labor Government couldn’t be trusted when it came to Oakden, and these numbers give me no confidence to trust they’re looking after our children.”

But Premier Jay Weatherill rejected the claim.

“The criticism is that we don’t get to enough of these childcare centers to assess them,” he said, “but the commonwealth actually cut the funding to us to do those assessments,” he said

“It’s a bit rich for the commonwealth to be making this criticism.

“The assessed child care centres that we have done in South Australia show that we exceed the national average, not below the national average.”

Of the local centres that have been assessed, 31 per cent didn’t meet all national standards. These centres are considered “safe” but have areas identified for improvement.
