2 min read

UPDATE, 8.18am — Substation problems.

Issues with substations at Northfield and Clearview are thought to be the cause of the majority of outages.

It is estimated power will be restored to the majority around 10am but some as late as 1.45pm.

EARLIER…

Tens of thousands of addresses across Adelaide are without power on Monday morning after strong winds hit the city overnight.

According to SA Power Networks, more than 24,000 customers were affected by the outage in Gilles Plains, Pooraka, Enfield, Hawthorn, Torrens Park and other north-eastern suburbs as well as some in the south.

In the early hours of Monday morning the Bureau of Meteorology released a severe weather warning for damaging affecting Adelaide Metropolitan, Mount Lofty Ranges, Flinders, Mid North, Riverland, Murraylands, Upper South East and parts of Eastern Eyre Peninsula, Yorke Peninsula, Lower South East and North East Pastoral districts.

According to the BOM:

“Damaging north to northeasterly winds will reach 50-65 km/h, with wind gusts of 90-100 km/h, mostly over and near elevated ground. Damaging winds extending to eastern parts after sunrise.

“Wind gusts in excess of 90 km/h are also possible with showers and thunderstorms across the warning area today.

“Locations which may be affected include Adelaide, Whyalla, Renmark, Murray Bridge, Naracoorte and Leigh Creek.”

The State Emergency Service advises that people should:

* Move vehicles under cover or away from trees;

* Secure or put away loose items around your property.

* Stay indoors, away from windows, while conditions are severe.
