Taxpayers Slugged For Premier’s AFL Grand Final Trip

1 min read

SA taxpayers have picked up the $2,570 bill for Premier Jay Weatherill’s attendance at this year’s AFL GF — including $695 for a limo ride.

The Advertiser reports Hughes Limousines charged the premier $695.66 for the day’s travel, despite the fact he was staying only a five-minute drive from the MCG.

“It is standard practice for hire cars to be used when the Premier travels interstate,” a spokesman told the paper.

“It was appropriate the Premier represented South Australia given the Adelaide Crows were playing in the AFL Grand Final.”

But opposition treasury spokesman Rob Lucas said Mr Weatherill needed to explain the bill.

“Given the Premier’s hotel was only a little over 1km from the MCG, the Premier has to answer questions about why taxpayers paid $570 to have his limo for almost six hours after the game, from 5pm until 10.45pm,” Mr Lucas said.
