Australian producers could be banned from using some of the most famous cheese names as part of a new free-trade agreement with the European Union.
A proposed “geographic indication” (GI) system means certain names could only be used in specific regions.
The names banned for use by Aussie producers would include:
Parmesan
Pecorino
Mozzarella
Feta
Halloumi
Brie
Camembert
Gorgonzola
According to the Herald Sun:
“They have said they won’t sign an agreement without GIs being included,” [Dairy Australia’s] Mr Myers said.
The agreement would result in the destruction of countless small and medium Australian cheesemakers, he said.
“This is a serious, serious problem we have to deal with here,” he said.
Under the deal Australian importers could still bring in European brands using the normal names.
